Schala is a young woman about the same age as the main cast of Chrono Trigger. Like many of the 'Enlightened Ones' in the Zeal Kingdom, her hair is a light colour and her physical health is weak. Schala also has elf-like ears similar to her relatives and other mystic characters. Schala is known for being a gentle and loyal character who believes in the goodness of other people. Overly polite and passive, it is her fear of hurting others that becomes the end of her. Being Royalty and future heir to Zeal's Kingdom, she has been tutored and mentored in the best ways possible. This is evident in her formal and proper etiquette usage. She also highly respects her elders. Schala is a strong magic user with all elements (Fire, Wind, Water) and Shadow. With the help of her pendant she is able to cast many spells, including one that seals gates and one that transports people. Her natural power surpasses that of her own mother, Queen Zeal. Only Schala and the three Gurus are strong enough to control the Mammon Machine. Schala and her younger brother Janus are very close. Like Janus, Schala can feel "the black wind" which fortells death. It seems to be something inherited from their mother, Queen Zeal. However, Queen Zeal is unaware of Janus' potential in magic use and pays him little attention. Although protective of her brother Janus, she fears taking action in reforming their mother. Her character is shown as one who easily gives up when her back is against the wall, so to speak. Schala was raised right though, her high morals and values show it. It seems her parents (her mother wasn't always evil) and their subjects had a hand in her upbringing. Schala believes in the equality of life and people. Regardless of where they live, how they look and whether they can use magic. This is evident when she visits the 'Earthbound Ones' and genuinely treats them as equals. Her younger brother Janus doesn't share such attitudes towards life and other people, so he's cynical and aloof for his age. Schala has assumed the role of Janus' role model after things changed. Although he says very little, Janus was highly influenced by Schala and cares about her very much. As an adult he ends up having good intentions, only he goes about them wrongly. § back |
