§ Exotic Princesses
Thanks to a recent email, I was informed of a character so strikingly similar to Schala that I had to include this section. The similarities between Schala and these characters is highly relevant. Both 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' and 'Secret of Blue Water' are based on '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. There is still debate over whether Disney's version is a copy of Gainax' version. Princess Nadia - Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (Gainax) This was a classic anime series that ran from 1990-1991, there is also a manga and movie. Nadia is introduced as a mysterious circus girl with a dark skin color, black hair, and green eyes. Her original design had curlier hair to reflect her African heritage. It's revealed that she's the Princess of a lost continent which is in ruins at the bottom of the sea. She also has unique powers such as telepathy. Nadia's gold pendant with a blue gem, known as Blue Water, is the key to restoring the lost empire of Atlantis. She also wears gold jewelry like Schala. Marle in the English CT game is also known as Princess Nadia. Princess Kida - Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Disney) This was an animated feature released in 2001. Kida is introduced as a 8,500 year old Atlantean with a dark skin color, white hair, and blue eyes. It's revealed that she's the Princess of the lost empire and has a unique power. Kida's gold pendant with a blue gem, along with her energy, is the key to saving Atlantis. She also wears gold jewelry like Schala. Kid is also the name of Schala's clone in Radical Dreamers and CC. Princess Nefertari Vivi - One Piece (Eiichiro Oda) This is an manga series that began in 1997, there is also the anime series and OVA. The following information is from Arlen Pavka. Vivi is introduced as a bumbling villianess with the codename "Miss Wednesday". It's revealed that she's the Princess of Alabasta (a location resembling Egypt) and her earlier alias was a cover so that she could infiltrate the criminal organization ruining her homeland. When she returns to Alabasta she wears a robe that looks just like Schala's and one of her companions is a duck resembling a chocobo (from FF games). She wears some gold jewelry like Schala, and is very sympathetic towards the people of her kingdom. Nefertiti is the name of a famous ancient Egyptian Queen, and Vivi is the name (meaning "life") of a Black Magician in FF9. Oda has admired Toriyama's works as a child and the two artists are now familiar with one another. As you can see, Toriyama's influence is apparent in Oda's storytelling style and character designs. § back |
