A Maid's Tale

A Final Fantasy VIII story in a Victorian setting.

This page is for Tealover's Final Fantasy VIII story, A Maid's Tale. Our collaboration began in 2004 but due to busy schedules, we had to take a break in 2006. In 2010, we resumed the work on our story because another friend joined in the collaboration but the scale had gotten so big that we had to slow down again.

Originally we created a fluffy story about a passive maid that would make for some relaxing Sunday afternoon reading. However, we kept coming up with ideas for character growth and political histories that fleshed out the story. We also wanted our readers to become interested in the traditional folk fashions and music that actually exist in our real world. With such diversity and so much to tell, we challenge the readers to draw their own conclusions.

Below we are revealing a small portion of the "bible" which exists for the story. Content appearing in brackets is in reference to disguises or temporary names and titles. Missing pieces or characters will be filled in or updated according to the latest released chapter. Keep in mind that this may have some spoilers about the story if you read between the lines.

Notes

  • Character ages are as of 1720 (Chapter 1). As of Chapter 17, it is the year 1721 and Rinoa is 27.
  • For a general understanding character accents: Galbadia = France, Winhill = England, Timber = Spain, Dollet = Italy, Balamb = Australia, Esthar = Americas, Centra & Islands = Africa, Spira = South Asia, Shumi = East Asia, South of Centra = Western/Central Asia and Russia, Northwest of Trabia = Nordic countries.
  • Characters who have spent years travelling between the Galbadia and Esthar continents may develop the Transatlantic accent. Characters who are no longer in their home town (which is not necessarily their genetic origin) have their accents softened over years.
